The Sanctity of Life: Abortion and Christian Values

October 21, 2024

Opening Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

We come before You today with humble hearts, recognizing that You are the Author of life. We thank You for the gift of life and the opportunity to gather together in Your presence. Lord, we ask for Your guidance and wisdom as we discuss a difficult but important issue—the sanctity of life and the tragedy of abortion. Let Your Holy Spirit soften our hearts to Your Word, and help us to respond in ways that reflect Your truth and love.

We know that political issues can cause division, but we pray for unity in Your Spirit. May we remember that our ultimate allegiance is to You and Your kingdom, and that Your values must guide our decisions, even in the public square.

Lord, help us to stand for what is right and true. Let Your Word be the light that directs our path, and let the love of Christ be our motivation in all that we do.

In the name of Jesus, we pray,

Amen.

Introduction (3 minutes):

• Today, we begin a two-part series on how Christian values intersect with the political landscape. In part one, we will focus on the topic of abortion, the sanctity of life, and the clear biblical mandate to protect innocent life.

• Let us remember that as Christians, our foundation is the Word of God, and we must filter our political views through the lens of Scripture. Abortion is not just a political issue—it is a deeply spiritual and moral issue that strikes at the heart of our understanding of life and God’s creation.

• We are called to be defenders of life, standing up for the voiceless and the vulnerable, just as Jesus did during His time on earth.

1. The Biblical Foundation for the Sanctity of Life (5 minutes)

• Psalm 139:13-16: “For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Let us remember that life is sacred because it is God who forms us in the womb. From conception, God is intimately involved in the creation of every human being.

• Jeremiah 1:5: “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” God’s knowledge and purpose for each individual begins before they are even born. Every life has inherent worth and dignity because it is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27).

• Abortion, then, is not merely a medical or political issue; it is an assault on God’s design and purpose for humanity. As Christians, we must stand firm on the biblical truth that life begins at conception and is to be valued and protected.

2. The Tragedy of Abortion: A Violation of God’s Command (5 minutes)

• Exodus 20:13: “You shall not murder.” The act of abortion directly violates the commandment not to take innocent life. Abortion is the willful destruction of a life that God has created with purpose and intention.

• Proverbs 6:16-17: “There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood…” Abortion is the shedding of innocent blood, something that grieves the heart of God.

• Example: Consider the staggering number of abortions that occur every year—millions of innocent lives ended before they even have a chance to breathe. Abortion is not just a private decision; it is a collective moral failure that has implications for our society’s spiritual health.

3. Donald Trump’s Pro-Life Policies: A Commitment to Life (10 minutes)

A. First President to Attend March for Life

• Example: In 2020, Donald Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to attend the March for Life, a demonstration dedicated to ending abortion. This marked a significant moment, as Trump publicly stood for the sanctity of life and against abortion on one of the largest platforms in the world.

• This action signals a clear alignment with Christian values and a commitment to defending the unborn.

B. Mexico City Policy & Defunding Planned Parenthood

• Policy: Trump reinstated and expanded the Mexico City Policy, which prevents U.S. taxpayer money from funding international organizations that provide or promote abortions. By doing so, Trump ensured that American dollars were not used to support the global abortion industry.

• Example: Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the U.S., saw a reduction in federal funding during Trump’s administration. This move was part of Trump’s broader commitment to defunding organizations that profit from the destruction of innocent lives.

• Biblical Basis: Proverbs 24:11-12 says, “Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say, ‘But we knew nothing about this,’ does not He who weighs the heart perceive it?” Trump’s actions in defunding Planned Parenthood are an example of rescuing the vulnerable and innocent.

C. Appointment of Pro-Life Justices

• Example: During his time in office, Trump appointed three Supreme Court justices—Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett—who are known for their conservative and pro-life views. These appointments have created a more pro-life majority on the Supreme Court, which has the potential to influence key cases related to abortion.

• Impact: These judicial appointments can shape future rulings on abortion, including potentially overturning or limiting Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion nationwide in 1973. By appointing pro-life justices, Trump has created an opportunity to protect unborn children on a national level.

4. Kamala Harris’ Pro-Abortion Stance: A Direct Threat to Life (5 minutes)

A. Extreme Support for Abortion

• Example: Kamala Harris has a long record of supporting abortion rights, including voting against bills that would protect babies who survive abortions. As a senator, she co-sponsored the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would remove virtually all state-level restrictions on abortion and make it more accessible than ever.

• Policy: Harris supports repealing the Hyde Amendment, which prevents taxpayer dollars from being used to fund abortions. If repealed, Americans—many of whom are Christians—would be forced to fund abortions through their taxes, violating their conscience.

• Biblical Basis: Proverbs 6:16-17 reminds us that God hates “hands that shed innocent blood.” Harris’ extreme pro-abortion stance goes against the biblical mandate to protect life.

B. Persecuting Pro-Life Activists

• Example: As Attorney General of California, Harris took legal action against pro-life activist David Daleiden, who exposed Planned Parenthood’s illegal sale of fetal tissue. Rather than investigate Planned Parenthood’s wrongdoing, Harris prosecuted Daleiden, demonstrating her hostility toward the pro-life movement.

• Impact: This action not only undermines the pro-life cause but also puts a chilling effect on those who wish to expose the truth about the abortion industry. Harris’ policies represent a clear threat to Christians who want to speak out for life.

5. The Call to Stand for Life (5 minutes)

• Ephesians 5:11: “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” As Christians, we are called not only to avoid sin but to expose evil. Abortion is a grave evil, and we have a responsibility to stand against it.

• James 4:17: “If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.” Let us remember that silence in the face of such a great moral evil as abortion is not an option for Christians.

• Action Steps:

1. Pray: Begin by praying for the unborn, for mothers in crisis pregnancies, and for leaders who have the power to change laws.

2. Speak Out: Use your voice to advocate for life in your community, whether through social media, conversations, or supporting pro-life organizations.

3. Vote: As Christians, we must support candidates whose policies protect life. Let us remember that our vote is a reflection of our values, and we must choose leaders who will stand for the unborn.

Conclusion (2 minutes):

• Let us remember the words of Proverbs 31:8: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.” The unborn cannot speak, but we can speak for them.

• In this election season, let us consider which candidates align with biblical values, particularly in the area of protecting life.

• Close with a prayer for wisdom, courage, and a renewed commitment to defending life.
